World Cup 2006

The FIFA executive committee took the decision that the World Cup 2006 will be held in Germany. It will be Germany's second time to host the World Cup after 1974. So far the tournament has been arranged 9 times in Europe, 4 times in Latin America, 2 times in Central America, once in North America and once in Asia (Korea & Japan).

The final competition was held July 9, 2006. A record number of 205 national teams declared a will to participate in the qualifiers. 

Thirty-two teams from across the globe made up the field for the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ finals. Six continents were represented and six past winners took part, including hosts Germany, who head the 14-strong European contingent, and holders Brazil who lead the South American challenge.

The participants were divided into 8 groups, and within each group the teams played in a system "everyone vs. everyone". From each group 2 teams qualified to the next round. The next round will be played as "play-offs", single elimination. With 12 venues will hosting all 64 games, the opening match took place in Munich and the final in Berlin.
Congratulations to all teams involved for an outstanding job.  Italy and France battled for what ended up being a very talented and entertaining final.  Congratulations to Italy for winning a well fought championship in penalty kicks.
